GTA 6 Is Eligible for The Game Awards 2026, With One Day to Spare

GTA 6 is eligible for The Game Awards 2026, by one day. The show's official FAQ sets the cutoff at Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT, and Rockstar Games releases the game on November 19.

Eligibility is not a nomination. A jury chooses the nominees for most categories, and the same rules apply to every eligible game.

The Game Awards 2026 cutoff and date

The FAQ says games "must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT." The Players' Voice category, which fans vote on, has a later cutoff: games must ship by November 30, 2026.

The ceremony streams live on Thursday, December 10, 2026, from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. That gives GTA 6 three weeks on sale before the show.

The cutoff came as no surprise. The Game Awards has used the third Friday of November for six years running, Game Rant notes; last year's was November 21. There had still been uncertainty over whether GTA 6 would make it, since a cutoff one day earlier would have left it out.

Who picks the nominees

Nominees for most categories are chosen by what the FAQ calls "over 100 global media and influencer outlets", each sending a confidential ballot. With a release date this close to voting, the question is how much of GTA 6 those jurors will have played. GamingBolt points out that eligibility "doesn't necessarily guarantee" a Game of the Year nomination.

The record GTA 6 would have to beat

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 holds the record for most wins in one night, with nine. GTA 6 has already won the show's Most Anticipated Game award twice, in 2024 and 2025. Rockstar's last big release, Red Dead Redemption 2, won four awards at The Game Awards 2018.

The Game Awards has not yet named this year's nominees. GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the show follows on December 10.
