Former Rockstar tech director claims AI rip-offs could bring the GTA 6 PC port forward
Obbe Vermeij, a Rockstar North technical director until 2009, claims an AI-converted PS5 build could hurt sales, so Rockstar has reason to close the gap. He says he does not know its plans.

This story is not confirmed by Rockstar Games. Treat the details as provisional.
A former Rockstar North technical director claims Rockstar has reason to put GTA 6 on PC sooner than it usually would, because AI tools now make an unofficial PC conversion possible. Obbe Vermeij, who left the studio in 2009, said it in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, and he was clear that it is his reading and not inside knowledge.
Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6 at all. Vermeij is speculating about a release that does not officially exist.
What Vermeij claims
His argument is that the gap Rockstar normally leaves between a console release and a PC one is now a risk. "I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC, which won't be as good as their effort, but it could still also hurt their sales," he said in quotes carried by BigGo Finance.
On the timing he was careful: "I wouldn't be surprised if there was an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together. Obviously, I don't really know what they're thinking."
What has changed, in his telling, is the cost of copying a game. "What was the case before is that there's so much effort in developing the game, that it is not possible to rip it off, and that's completely changed now," he said.
The claim about what an AI port would cost
Vermeij does not describe an AI conversion as easy. He claims it would run for hours of machine time and cost tens of thousands of dollars in tokens, and that the result would be worse than an official port. He still expects someone to attempt it: "It will take a long time. It actually, physically takes hours and hours and hours to do these things. But like, you know, if it's GTA, I think people are gonna try it." The same quotes appear in EnosTech's write-up of the interview.
What Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said about PC
Neither company has confirmed a PC version. The only reported window is GamesBeat's October report that Rockstar plans a PC release in the first three months of 2027, which cited four unnamed industry sources, and Rockstar did not comment on it. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick has pointed PC questions back to Rockstar.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no announced PC date.
