GTA 6 Has No Online Mode at Launch: Rockstar Calls It a Single-Player Experience

The PlayStation and Xbox listings for GTA 6 say one player and offline play, and Take-Two's chief executive says the same. No online mode, and no in-game spending, at launch.

GTA 6 arrives on November 19 without an online mode. Rockstar's own description on the PlayStation Store says "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience", and the listing's features are "1 player" and "Offline play enabled".

The Xbox Store listing matches it. Its only capability is single player, and the description calls the game a single-player experience set in Vice City. Neither store lists online play, co-op or any multiplayer feature.

What Take-Two has said

Strauss Zelnick, the chief executive of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, said the same at the company's shareholder meeting on September 17. GTA 6 "will come out on November 19 as a single-player experience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S", he said, in remarks reported by GTA BOOM.

He tied the same point to money. There is "no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch", Zelnick said, which rules out the in-game purchases that fund GTA Online. The $79.99 Standard Edition and the $99.99 Ultimate Edition are what Rockstar is selling at launch.

GTA Online in GTA 5 keeps running

Zelnick said GTA V Online "continues to be a robust business for us", with no change announced for it when the new game arrives. Both GTA 6 editions include one month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription, which the PlayStation listing says must be claimed by March 31, 2027. The listing does not say what that membership covers in GTA 6.

What has not been announced

Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6, a name for one, or a window for when it might arrive. It has also not said whether such a mode would be a free update or a separate purchase. The only dates the company has given are November 10 for pre-load and November 19 for release.
