GTA 6 Story Structure: Chapters, Choices and Character Switching

GTA 6's story runs chapter by chapter, starts in the Leonida Keys, and asks you to earn money in the open world before it moves on. Rockstar says your decisions shape how Jason and Lucia's story plays out.

This page covers how GTA 6's story is built, not what happens in it. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, set out the premise to Famitsu: Jason and Lucia need money, "a job that was supposed to be simple ends in complete disaster," and they end up pursued by various people. "The player's decisions affect everything," he said.

Chapters and safehouses

The story moves chapter by chapter, and Jason and Lucia move between safehouses as it does. Nelson compared the safehouses to the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2, where everyone living there has a daily schedule.

It begins in the Leonida Keys, where Jason's first house from the trailers sits. New areas fill in on the map as you unlock them, and places you have not been stay hidden until you visit. The Italian YouTuber Mike ShowSha, who played a preview build in July, says that after the opening missions you are free to go where you like, and the story itself moves you through Vice City and Leonida.

Choices

According to Mike ShowSha, some story moments ask you to make a decision, and those decisions can affect later events. Jason and Lucia's relationship counts too: whether you nurtured it "will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out," Nelson told IGN. Behaving consistently violently may also have an effect, through the Criminal Profile.

Money moves the story on

"Simply completing missions won't give you enough money to progress the story," Nelson told Famitsu. You earn the rest in the open world, by robbing stores, stealing and selling cars and other work, and that unlocks the next steps.

Switching between Jason and Lucia

You can switch to either character, or bring the two together. Whoever you are not controlling follows their own schedule. Some missions lock you to one character: Nelson described an early mission through a high-rise housing complex that is played as Jason, the former special forces soldier, because it felt more natural.

Other missions switch for you. In a getaway Nelson described, you shoot at police as Jason while Lucia drives, then control passes to Lucia at the wheel while Jason and Raul Bautista fire from the back seat. Some jobs, such as robbing a gas station store, can be done alone or with your partner along.

A partner you are not controlling still takes orders. Mike ShowSha says that during a chase he told the AI-controlled Lucia to hurry, and she sped up and wove through traffic.

What is still unknown

Rockstar has not said how many chapters there are, whether the story has more than one ending, or how long it takes to finish. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
