Money matters more in GTA 6 than in the earlier games. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told Famitsu that "simply completing missions won't give you enough money to progress the story." The rest has to be earned in the open world.
Cash and the bank account
Jason and Lucia have a bank account as well as the cash they carry, and you can check the balance in game. Cash on hand is at risk: Nelson said that if the police or civilians take you down, you lose all the cash you are carrying, "so you're better off depositing it somewhere safe." A banking app on the phone handles the account.
Ways to make money
Nelson named the main ones in his interviews:
- Robbing stores, by stealth or by force.
- Robbing jewelry stores and small banks, alone or as a pair.
- Raiding gang hideouts, where the map shows how much cash and how many drugs are inside.
- Stealing cars and selling them to a Pay 'n' Spray or a car fence.
- Delivering stolen cars that a fence named Randy is looking for.
Fences
Stolen goods need a buyer. Nelson said drugs taken from gang hideouts can go to a fence, and later in the game you meet vehicle fences who can strip trackers from stolen cars so they can be sold. A car's value drops with damage, so careful driving pays.
Marked money and laundering
According to the Italian YouTuber Mike ShowSha, who played a preview build in July, a large bag of money stolen in his session was marked. It could not be used as normal cash, so the group took it to a business that launders money. Rockstar has not explained laundering itself.
What money is for
Besides moving the story on, Nelson mentioned paying to register stolen cars as your own, buying garages to keep more vehicles, guns and store-exclusive weapons at Ammu-Nation, outfits and hairstyles.
What is still unknown
Rockstar has not said how much money each story step needs, whether the bank account earns or loses anything over time, or how widely laundering is used. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
