GTA 6 is the story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and how close they are is up to you. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told Famitsu that Rockstar chose a couple so players would care about the protagonists the way they cared about Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Couple or accomplices

The story makes them work together in most situations. Whether they get through it "as a couple or simply as accomplices is up to the player," Nelson said. Players who would rather skip the romance can, and the two carry on as partners. The game shows a status for their relationship, next to their bank balance.

Building the relationship

It grows when they spend time together, whether that is playing pool, mini golf, kayaking or robbing banks, Nelson told IGN. You can call or text the other character at any time, and ignoring a goodnight message "may impact your relationship a bit."

Effort keeps it going. If the relationship is not deepened, Nelson said, you lose options such as holding hands or kissing, but you can win them back by putting the work in.

Breaking up

They can split as a couple. The Italian YouTuber Mike ShowSha, who played a preview build in July, says Nelson confirmed it when asked, and that the pair stay partners in crime because their story continues. He also describes moments where you decide whether to tell the other something or keep it hidden; telling can cause trouble straight away, and hiding it can cause worse trouble later.

Does it change the story?

Yes. "Whether you've nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out," Nelson told IGN. He added that there is no particular gameplay benefit to keeping them close.

Life at the safehouse

Both have routines around their safehouse, and whoever you are not playing follows their own schedule. Nelson described small details: carrying a coffee mug somewhere sensible instead of dropping it on the floor, and Jason pulling back the covers to climb into bed beside a sleeping Lucia. "I think this might be the first game to implement bed covers," he said.

Different fighting styles

The two fight differently, according to Mike ShowSha's notes as reported by Insider Gaming: Lucia uses kickboxing and mixed martial arts, while Jason fights like a street brawler, relying on heavy punches and strength.

What is still unknown

Rockstar has not said how many story moments depend on the relationship, or whether it changes the ending. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
