How Stealing Cars Works in GTA 6
Stealing cars in GTA 6 takes the right tool for the car, and the best ones carry alarms and trackers. A phone scanner shows what a car is worth before you take it, and fences, Pay 'n' Spray and registration decide what happens next.

Grand theft auto has more steps in GTA 6. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told IGN that pressing one button to break into any parked car is gone. Cars come in tiers, and the best ones need tools you only get later in the story.
Tools for each tier
Older cars open with lock-picking tools. Newer and luxury cars need a key cloner, a device that copies electronic key data, which you get later in the game, Nelson told Famitsu. IGN's interview also mentions a slim-jim. Carjacking a car someone is driving is always an option.
Scan before you steal
A scanner on the phone shows whether a car is locked, has an alarm or carries a tracker, plus what it would fetch at a Pay 'n' Spray or a car fence and what it would cost to register as your own.
Alarms and trackers
Breaking a window sets off the alarm, so cloning the key is the quiet way into a newer car. Luxury cars are likely to have an advanced tracker, and Nelson said driving slowly for a while lets it signal your position to the police. Cars with a tracker have to be driven fast.
Owners can also report a theft. If police dispatch says the suspect is fleeing in the car, you have heat, and getting out of the car is the way to drop it.
Carjacking
Sometimes shouting at a driver to get out is enough. Sometimes it is not, and Nelson said they "may even shoot at you." Shooting back affects your Criminal Profile; running away is the other choice.
Selling stolen cars
Check a car's value at a Pay 'n' Spray and decide whether a fence will pay more. Damage lowers the price, so drive carefully. After a sale, the same Pay 'n' Spray will not take another car for a while.
Some cars cannot be sold early on and have to be dumped. Later you meet vehicle fences who remove trackers, and a fence named Randy pays for specific cars he is looking for.
Keeping a stolen car
Register it at a Pay 'n' Spray to make it a personal vehicle. Until then it shows on the radar with a gray icon and disappears when you restart the game, much like a stolen horse in Red Dead Redemption 2. The Italian YouTuber Mike ShowSha, who played a preview build in July, says stolen cars can have little fuel or battery left.
Where you cannot steal
The areas around safehouses are safe zones, and some story locations are protected. Nelson's example is the club owned by Jason's friend Dre'Quan Priest: no car theft outside it. "It wouldn't be good for business."
What is still unknown
Rockstar has not said when the key cloner unlocks, how many car fences there are, or how much registration costs. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Frequently asked questions
Can you steal any car in GTA 6?
Not at first. Older cars open with lock-picks, but luxury cars need a key cloner that you get later in the story. Carjacking a driver is always possible.
Can you keep stolen cars in GTA 6?
Yes, by registering them at a Pay 'n' Spray. Unregistered stolen cars disappear when you restart the game.
How do you sell stolen cars in GTA 6?
At a Pay 'n' Spray or to a car fence. Damage lowers the price, and cars with trackers need a vehicle fence to remove them first.
