GTA 6 Edge Cover Story: K9 Units, Stinger Strips, Longer Nights and a Four-Point Relationship Scale

Rockstar North played GTA 6 unscripted for 90 minutes in front of Edge. The feature adds police dogs, stinger strips, seasonal weather, working buses and trains, and a fee for car delivery.

Rockstar North let Edge magazine watch 90 minutes of GTA 6 played without a script for the cover story of Edge 430, on sale October 29. Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development, played the current build, and the full feature by Simon Parkin is on GamesRadar.

The session was free roam, not story missions, and some of it repeats what Nelson told Famitsu and IGN in earlier interviews. The details below are the ones Edge adds.

Police stinger strips and K9 units

During a getaway on a stolen motorcycle with Lucia riding pillion, police coordinated by radio and laid a stinger strip across the road. Edge says it was almost invisible at speed at night. The front tyre burst, both characters were thrown over the handlebars, and a K9 unit joined the chase as they limped away. The dog caught Jason almost immediately and pinned him to the ground.

The same chase showed switching on the move: you can hand the driving to the other character and take control of the passenger to shoot at pursuing cars.

Police cars and a helicopter chase the player down a Vice City street under a four-star wanted level.

Heat works as Rockstar has described before. Icons at the top of the screen show what the police know: your description, your clothes, whether CCTV caught you, the weapon you carried and whether you were seen with a partner. Edge adds that some drivers flee when you take their car while others are armed and fight back, a newer car's tracker keeps broadcasting your position, and the owner can report the theft behind you.

Cloud systems, seasons and a longer day-night cycle

Aaron Garbut, Rockstar North's other co-studio head, said GTA 5's weather was "either rainy or sunny" and GTA 6's is "much more granular". Clouds move independently, shaped by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. Roads stay wet after a storm, buildings drip and surfaces dry at different rates.

Wind moves trees, clouds and waves. Islands and buildings shelter stretches of water, so a boat skips over the surface in one bay and gets rocked in another. Planes and helicopters are buffeted in storms and can take light damage if they stay in severe weather, and pedestrians look for shelter.

Storm clouds hang over Ambrosia's lights and factory smoke at dusk.

The mention of season is the first time a GTA 6 preview has used the word. Edge does not say how seasons change during play.

The day-night cycle is substantially longer than GTA 5's, with sunsets that linger and longer nights. Nelson said that when the team tested GTA 6 at GTA 5's timings, "everything felt too fast".

Jason and Lucia's four-point relationship scale

How close Jason and Lucia are is measured on a four-point scale that usually rises the more time they spend together, whether that is walking on the beach, cycling, working out at a gym once they have bought a membership, or driving around. Nelson would not confirm or deny whether the couple can marry.

"We start them wanting to be together, and wanting to give this relationship of theirs another shot," Nelson said. "But, as the game progresses, it's yours to keep or yours to lose." Edge calls quitting crime a fundamental theme of the story, though you cannot leave the criminal life during play.

The Criminal Profile runs from Professional to Irredeemable, shown with angel and devil icons. Incapacitating an enemy, or using threats before violence, is the professional route, and Rockstar says the profile will influence how the story unfolds.

Scooter Bros, fuel and the WAINK app

The Scooter Bros app delivers your car within a few seconds for a modest fee, and the driver leaves on a scooter. Your whole arsenal is in that car's trunk. Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine health readout; a tank lasts a long distance and refuelling is quick.

A phone app called WAINK lists the cars fences want, with each model's security features and tracking. Higher-end cars ping their location to the police on the way to the drop-off, where the fence usually has a signal blocker, and part of the payment depends on the car's condition.

The story has some natural gating. Jason and Lucia will sometimes need to raise cash before the next job, by holding up a gas station or jewelry store or stealing a car a fence wants.

Buses, trains and other details

  • Public transport: buses and trains are fully functioning. Phil Hooker, a third head of development, said he has memorised the routes: "I'm obsessed with making sure they always turn up."
  • Disgust reactions: a reaction to a bad smell, first made for one location, became a system other places can trigger. Jason grimaced and recoiled in a house wrecked by a dog, with no scene written for it.
  • Coffee and protein shakes: Jason drank coffee for stamina and a protein shake for a health buff, and lit a cigarette from his inventory.
  • Carrying guns: pedestrians notice whether a shotgun is slung on your back or held in your hands. You can drop a weapon, and there is some leeway before a wanted level.
  • Random encounters: a man you rob may attack when you turn away, a shopper may intervene in a gas station holdup, and a group of youths in a 4x4 with purple underglow pressured Nelson into a street race.
  • Roads and interiors: roads are narrower than GTA 5's, to "a more believable size", and Garbut said the game has "an order of magnitude more interiors" than its predecessors.

Edge puts the map at roughly twice the size of GTA 5's. Rockstar says Leonida is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.

Claims not in the feature

Two details shared alongside the coverage do not appear in the feature as published on GamesRadar. GamesRadar's GTA 6 O'Clock show said the map opens up early enough to head north without following the story, and that you can carry two concealed handguns while larger guns stay in the trunk or ammunition lockers. Rockstar has not confirmed either.

Rockstar has not said how seasons work, whether Jason and Lucia can marry, or what Scooter Bros charges. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Frequently asked questions

Can Jason and Lucia get married in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not said. Rob Nelson told Edge he would neither confirm nor deny it. Their closeness is measured on a four-point scale, and how far it goes is up to the player.

Does GTA 6 have seasons?

Edge reports that GTA 6's cloud systems are shaped partly by season, the first time a preview has mentioned seasons. Rockstar has not explained how seasons change during play.

How long is a day in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not given a length. Edge says the day-night cycle is substantially longer than GTA 5's, and Nelson said GTA 5's timings made everything feel too fast at GTA 6's level of detail.

Can you ride buses and trains in GTA 6?

Yes. Edge reports fully functioning bus and train systems, and Rockstar North's Phil Hooker said he rides the buses across Leonida to check they arrive on time.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

Edge puts Leonida at roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map. Rockstar says it is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. The game launches on November 19, 2026.
